Three, with Hardy Spicer needle roller bearing universal joints.
Fully-floating, with hypoid final drive, drive andtorque taken through rear springs. Pinion straddle-mounted between roller bearings. 3-pinion differential.
Twin Rear-Wheel Equipment: Axles with twin rear-wheel hubs have exactly the same servicing procedures as for single-wheel equipment, except that the hubs are modified with eight wheel-hub bolts instead of ten, as on single wheels, and the axle-shafts are approximately 1 inch shorter.
Twin rear-wheel equipment axles are not interchangeable with single-wheel equipment.
From Chassis No. R26778, outer axle ends increased in thickness and other machining altered. This requires new inner taper roller bearings, oil seals, and oil deflectors, to suit.
From Chassis No. R26875, the rear axle shaft attachment studs are increased from 7/16in. to 1/2in., and the axle shaft flange is revised to suit.
The studs must be tightened to a torque of 60-65 lb. ft. (81-88 N m)
From Chassis No. R28232, new higher-level breathers were introduced to permit fording in shallow water, by way of an extension pipe and rubber tube into the chassis. The front axle is modified similarly.
From Chassis No. R30640, the rear axle pinion was strengthened by an increase in radius between the innear bearing journal and shoulder. This requires a new bearing with a larger radius at one end of the inner bore.
At Chassis No. R35082, the gear thrust pad and hexagon headed thrust pad screw, have been replaced by a pad and a milled head screw.
Install thrust pad & screw, and tighten until pad just contacts the hypoid gear. Slacken back 45° (1/8 turn) to obtain correct clearance and tighten locknut. Shims are not required with this arrangement.
At Chassis No. R37950 the gear thrust pad and screw are changed again. The new thrust screw has a hardened end which contacts the gear, replacing the previous pad and screw.
Adjustment process remains the same as the previous part.
Three of the differential side-bearing-cap bolts are through-holes into the housing. The bolt threads must be smeared with a sealing compound to prevent water ingress during fording. This also applies to the front axle.
The handbrake bell crank lever upper support bracket is attached to the axle housing by two bolts. These are also through-holes and require sealant upon reassembly, to prevent water ingress during fording.
Semi-elliptic, progressive type spring, with second leaf extending forward around spring-eye.
Differential and hypoid gear assembly common with rear axle. Enclosed front-wheel drive. Steering pivots taken by taper roller bearings. Front hubs mounted on taper roller bearings.
Twin Rear-Wheel Equipment: Front hubs are modified to take the smaller wheels, the hubs having eight wheel hub bolts. Hub bearing dimensions are unaffected by the change.
From Chassis No. R28233 the front axle shaft attachment studs are increased from 7/16 in. to 1/2 in., with a corresponding increase in axle shaft flange hole size.
The larger studs must be tightened to a torque of 60-65 lb. ft (81-88 N m)
Camber Angle | 0.5° to 1° |

Steering Pivot Inclination | 6° to 7° |
Castor Angle | 1° to 2° |
Semi-elliptic with second leaf extending forward around spring-eye. The rear section of the spring incorporates a wind-up restriction plate.
Double-acting hydraulic, front and rear.
